Fairgoers flying into Munich, Germany, later this year for Inter Airport 2009 may experience a somewhat different landing than initially anticipated when they finally make their way to the exhibition grounds at the Munich Trade Fair Centre. Germany’s Losberger GmbH will spotlight flexible and economical airport space solutions that the company calls “relocatable terminals”. The Losberger tent constructions are widely hailed as an ideal solution for existing airport terminals that are not capable of coping with increased passenger handling capacities during peak periods or unexpected emergencies.
While Munich International Airport expects no difficulties in handling increased traffic resulting from Inter Airport, Losberger has enjoyed considerable success at other venues for its Relocatable Terminal Solution. During Euro 2004, for example, when football enthusiasts flocked to Portugal for the three-week long soccer spectacle, Losberger created a temporary terminal building using its maxiflex component system to accommodate overflow passengers.
Lisbon’s Portela Airport turned again to Losberger in 2007 for help in bridging a capacity bottleneck caused by the need to construct a new passenger terminal – a project not expected to complete until at least 2017. Losberger was able to construct a strong and durable semi-permanent terminal exclusively for domestic passengers in just eight weeks.
The new Terminal 2 features three separate buildings covering 7,725 square meters. The main contractor Siemens, Industrial Solutions and Services Group completed the interior of the terminal, which has a check-in area that covers 2,100 square meters. That space includes 22 check-in counters, six electronic check-in kiosks, six security control posts, a restaurant area, positions to weigh and process luggage, lavatories and technical assistance facilities. Terminal 2 also has 12 boarding gates and a boarding lounge with seats for up to 480 passengers. The terminal can handle 60 departures and approximately 5,000 passengers per day.
According to Diana Vogel, a Marketing Manager based with Losberger GmbH in Bad Rappenau, Germany, the company’s relocatable terminals are flexible, fast and cost-effective alternatives to conventional construction methods and represent the deal solution to increasing an airport’s ability to plane and deplane passengers in response to special events or unforeseen emergencies like fire. The buildings require no concrete foundation and can be erected and dismantled in just weeks, instead of months or even years. Short lead times and a wealth of floor plans further enhance the flexibility of the solution. Span widths of up to 50 meters as well as buildings of unlimited length are possible.
In addition to its installations in Portugal, Losberger has already provided several attractive tent-style terminal solutions in Nuremberg, Luxor and Doha, all of which proved that tent halls are an excellent alternative for airport terminals in need of a temporary or event permanent capacity boost. One of the company’s more recent and successful implementations of the terminal-inside-a-tent concept came at the Doha Asian Games 2007 (see photo), where a Losberger maxiflex structure with seven domed areas provided a temporary terminal solution that helped event organizers cope with increased passenger traffic to the games.
Readers attending Inter Airport 2009 (October 6-9, 2009 in Munich) are encouraged to visit the Losberger exhibit at the Munich Trade Fair Centre in Hall 6, Stand 270.
